Voting has always been promoted as our cherished freedom, but in reality it is an insidious form of suppression. Reputably, the government acts in accord to the “will of the people,” therefore all actions done by the government are done because we gave them the license to.

The truth, however, is that voting nationally suppresses our free will because we believe we are making a choice. How can we make a choice when we live in a two-party system ? Regardless if a Democrat or a Republican is in office, American policy is that of a hegemonic worldview . Currently the government is waging a war for profit , damaging our environment at a rapid pace, taking away from social services , and eradicating our personal freedoms , to just name a few. Either party will continue this trend and work for those who are really in charge, the corporate elite. If you think your vote really counts look back at the election of Bush vs. Gore. The majority of the American population voted for Al Gore, yet Bush came out the victor. The Electoral College votes are what determine the election, not the votes of the people.

Voting is an act of violence! When we vote, we vote for a candidate, we vote for his or her policy and one aspect of that current policy is war. Millions are dying at our hands. By voting nationally, we give the people we elect the authority to massacre millions of people. Let’s stop giving them that authority, let’s strip it away, and stop voting! If no one in the next election voted or just a small percentage did, it would be the best protest. The government would no longer have permission to act in accord with the “people’s will.”

I will end it with a poignant quote by Chris Hedges who shatters the glass of illusion separating us from the truth:

Voting will not alter the corporate systems of power. Voting is an act of political theater. Voting in the United States is as futile and sterile as in the elections I covered as a reporter in dictatorships like Syria, Iran and Iraq. There were always opposition candidates offered up by these dictatorships. Give the people the illusion of choice. Throw up the pretense of debate. Let the power elite hold public celebrations to exalt the triumph of popular will. We can vote for Romney or Obama, but Goldman Sachs and ExxonMobil and Bank of America and the defense contractors always win. There is little difference between our electoral charade and the ones endured by the Syrians and Iranians. Do we really believe that Obama has, or ever had, any intention to change the culture in Washington?

  1. This is still very difficult for me. I was one of those 18-year old young people standing in lines that snaked around the corner, waiting to register to vote during the Nixon era. I’ve always believed what you say is a lie — that my vote counted for something, and it was my right and my privilege to vote. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the concept that this is yet another way those really in power have of tricking us into thinking we actually matter to the system!

    • I think it might also have to do with having a Tuesday eloiectn. I have no idea how people would find the time to vote, even if they wanted to. Seriously folks, they need to change it to Saturday there are some traditions that are just stupid and need to be re-thought!

      • Haha I agree, we should be able to vote during the whole weekend. I just write it in and drop it off (I only vote for local propositions).

  2. Meaningful and yet meaningless, Yes, Voting orchastrates more buzz for the masses that time and time again blinds people from the true meaning of life.
