Sleep is so beautiful.
When we close our eyes, it’s as if we are closing the door to all our worries and pains. The one time in our day where we can just let it all go for the meantime and just deal with it in the morning. The one time in our day where we are free from the tribulations of life; free from the letters marking “UNPAID,” or “NOTICE OF DISCONTINUATION” in big bold letters bleeding red.
Free from our controlling boss who feels the need to micro-manage us because of his low self esteem. Free from the sounds of screaming cars and amusement park-like lines on the freeway. Free from your meddling coworker who speaks only to your back and not to your face.
Just free!
In our sleep we don’t have to deal with the realities of our society; we are free from feeling that guilt for turning our heads away from the beggar. Free from having to put only 2 dollars in gas, just enough to make it home. Free from customers who put us down and make us feel worthless everyday at our job. Free from the arguments and childish fights we have with our loved ones. Free from news highlights telling us how bad our world is. Free from the anxiety donated to us by our bullied or troubled children.
Just free!
Let the sleep rid us of the multitude of errands needing done, of the health problems and their symptoms frustrating us every day, of our overbearing parents, jealous boyfriends and girlfriends, of the studying needed to pass that test, of having to travel an hour extra everyday to work because of inadequate public transportation, of skinny refrigerators because we are living paycheck to paycheck, and of the sadness our hearts carry everyday because of an ailing loved one.
We can have the worst days and go to bed with beating hearts, tense shoulders, frustrated eyes, and constricted veins. Yet, as we close our eyes they begin to become calmer, our hearts beat slower, shoulders become looser, and the blood in our veins starts to flow more easily.
Yeah, we may have bad dreams that infect us night in and night out; but it isn’t real like the nightmare that is life. Yeah, when the war yell of our alarms wakes us, we have to start all over again and deal with all the shit that we postponed in our sleep. But dammit those are precious hours of freedom we have, let’s be grateful for them and look forward to them tonight.
Let your sleep be the time you break off the shackles of life. Even prisoners locked in cages are free in their sleep. Sweatshop workers, sex slaves, abused children, and other victims of a society run amok, are only free in their sleep.
Only one slave still exists in this world and his name is insomniac.
Sleep.
Go ahead, close your eyes, close the doors to the misery that is life, and embrace the paradise of darkness. Escape from your existence.
As for me, I will stare at my chains, for I am not allowed to slam down the lids of my eyes. The closest I get to freedom is a blink here and there, maybe a snooze, a doze, or a nap of the cat.
Until the day I sleep, my name will be insomniac.

I would be so unhappy if I couldn’t fall asleep as easily as I do! I really feel bad for people who have insomnia!
